Coral Sea Stars and Coral

Evidently there's a whole bunch of stuff going on under the sea -- beautiful corals, sea fans, kelp, sea stars -- and that's just on one rock!

Here on our little island we discover all kinds of sealife when the sun and moon pull the saltwater to the other side of the globe, giving us those wonderful low tides. Last summer during a minus four foot tide I discovered critters I hadn't seen before; my neighbor even found a baby octopus. A prize find for me was brittle sea star, the only one I've ever seen.

In my mind the sea creatures are partying when we're not looking, and so here they are in a festive mood. The 19"x19"x6" handpainted pillow displays images of our ubiquitous Ochre Sea Star and somebody else's finger coral, which only grows in warm climates. The colors are warm and summery, pretty much like you find in orange and mango sherbet or gelato. Mmmmmmm . . . gelato . . .
