Said to have originated about 200 years ago from body painting, the Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands in Panama developed the "MOLA", a kind of texitle artwork of embroidery and applique that depicts tropical flora and fauna and the ease of living in the region.

French missionaries in Panama imported fine French cotton poplins for the Kunas embroider...and they have maintained some of the last and most beautifully crafted indigenous textile artforms in the world.
